Default The Fall of Joan of Arcadia

I was very disappointed when this show only lasted two seasons and granted my husband bought me the DVD set of Season 1 for our anniversary a long time ago and I never watched it but I did love this show. He and I were both disappointed that it was canceled because by the end of Season Two it looked like they were breweing up a big storyline. I know that ratings play a big factor but what do you think contributed to the cancellation? Because when it first aired it was a critically acclaimed show. I just don't get why it fell so fast.

I can see people being uneasy about the fact that it revolves so much around God and they did a pretty good job of keeping it mostly 'religion free" so as not to offend, but then I think of the other series like "Highway to Heaven" and "Touched By An Angel" that were more successful.

I have a theory and it's probably not a good one. I recently started watching the series again on a station called Smart that I had no idea existed and I realized what a great show it is. I'm still in Season One but the last ep I watched made my jaw drop in amazement. I love how at the end of each show, the reason for God's request to Joan is revealed even if it's not blatantly obvious.

That being said, I know that Joan's dad is Chief of Police and honestly I thought that the scenes of him working and so forth were too much. The scenes where Joan was at school, etc, seemed more in touch with the show's premise and the scenes with her dad at the station made it feel more like NYPD Blue. I think if they had focused more on Joan or maybe had the show be 30 minutes instead of an hour it might have done better.

Any thoughts?

Okay, so I found this thread http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/...d.php?t=141230 which pretty much answered my question but I'm still curious to see what other people think. I have nothing against Joe Mantanga, BTW. I really liked him and everyone in the cast.

It also aired on Friday nights which was often a low ratings night. I really liked the show and hated to see it end.

That's right, it did air on Fridays. I forgot about that. I do miss this show a lot and it's been airing on START TV (a station I had no idea I could even get!), so it's been fun to watch the eps from the beginning!
