Since it has been on the news, here are some details regarding the California earthquakes of the last two days.

Ridgecrest
July 4, 10:33 AM. Magnitude 6.4. Depth 5.5 miles.

July 5, 8:09 PM. Magnitude 7.1 Depth 10 miles.

The first quake is now considered a foreshock to the later one.

It has happened before, in 1992:

Joshua Tree, April, 6.1 magnitude

Landers, June, 7.3 magnitude

With the last one (yesterday), there is a 27% chance there will be a 6.0 or larger aftershock within the next week.

I felt both. Was at home during the first quake and was walking with a friend during the second event. A slow, rolling motion. The epicenter was about 150 miles from where I live.

I read there was a crack in the Mojave Desert. Are Californians still waiting for the Big One Fleet? How does this latest occurrence compare with San Francisco 1906 and are you prepared for one of such magnitude?

Yes, there was some surface cracks.

I don't know if we are "waiting" for the Big One. We are aware it may happen in our lifetime.

The San Francisco 1906 quake is classified as a magnitude 7.8. It was assigned at 8.2 but has been downgraded. The two quakes yesterday and today were in a remote area, therefore damage was minimal. The SF quake was stronger and released much more energy (an 8.0 quake releases 30 times more energy than a 7.0).

I would say same are prepared and some are not.

Plus in 1906 the building codes weren't like they are today! Same as in third world countries there is far more building damage, injury and death than there are here!

Too bad my church refrained the requiem...

...if it was STILL active...I would've suggested the people who were killed and/or injured in the 2019 earthquake.

And as much as I love writing screenplays...I would only send them to California than live there for good...there's many problems there as we speak!

Whether the "big one" will ever happen is debatable. Predictions that California will break off and fall into the ocean have been pretty much debunked. Earthquakes are only as bad as the damage they do. That depends on where they happen, how close to populated areas, how close to the surface, etc. Third world countries are at much greater risk. A much less powerful Earthquake hit Iran this morning but it's certain to do more damage because of the inferior level of construction.

They say the more likely scenario would be the Pacific Plate moving north along the North American Plate, but that's only if you focus squarely on the San Andreas Fault.

Yes, that part of the Pacific Plate (the San Andreas fault section) is a strike-slip fault... the movement is mainly horizontal.

Eventually, the portion of California west of that fault will break off from the mainland, but it will take about one million years. I don't think we'll be around to see that happen!
