TV "black-ish" Prequel Series Centered on Teen Rainbow Eyed at ABC

"black-ish" Prequel Series Centered on Teen Rainbow Eyed at ABC
by Denise Petski
February 11, 2019

The current fifth season of "black-ish" will include a Rainbow-centric episode. The episode, which is already casting to film in March, will feature flashbacks to a teen version of Tracee Ellis Ross’ character of Rainbow.

No deals are done but I hear the episode could become a backdoor pilot for a potential prequel series. "black-ish" co-executive producer Peter Saji is in talks to pen the episode, set in the 1980s-90s, which will revolve around Rainbow’s growing up.

If deals make and the episode indeed becomes a planted spin-off, "black-ish" creator Kenya Barris is expected to be an executive producer on the potential prequel but likely won’t have day-to-day creative involvement given his overall deal commitment to Netflix.

"black-ish" Spin-off "mixed-ish" Centered on Young Bow Ordered to Series at ABC
by Michael Ausiello
May 2, 2019

ABC’s burgeoning "black-ish" franchise continues to expand, with the network placing a series order for a 1980s-set prequel offshoot centered on a young version of Tracee Ellis Ross’ Bow.

Now titled "mixed-ish", the spin-off follows a 12-year-old Bow (played by relative newcomer Arica Himmel), who is described as emotionally and intellectually brilliant but also clueless, confused and awkward.

The project was initially slated to get a “test run” as a regular standalone episode of "black-ish", to air on May 7. But in light of the series order, ABC has decided to hold the episode — titled “Becoming Bow” — until next season.
