Default "The Facts of Life" and ancient mythology

So I've mentioned a few times in the past how I like noting some parallels between Peekskill and Ancient Greece, and I thought it would be fun to go into more detail on that (and I left the title of this thread all-inclusive in case anyone finds parallels in other mythologies).

In Greek mythology there were lots of gods, but the "12 Great Olympians" were the dozen gods on the "top tier" of all the gods, Zeus and 11 members of his family (well, some say Aphrodite is Zeus's daughter, but some believe in a radically different origin story for her). It can be fun to look for parallels between Eastland characters and ancient deities (they won't be exact parallels, of course, but it's fun to find identifying shared characteristics).

So, don your toga, and give praise to the "Facts"!

Nancy (NAN-cy) and Hestia (HESS-ti-uh)

In Greek myth, the king of the gods, Zeus, was 1 of 3 brothers, and they had 3 sisters. Hestia was the first-born of all 6 siblings, the goddess of hearth and home. She was the kindest and mildest of all the Olympians, keeping peace, remaining a pacifist, and not taking part in any wars, conflicts, or love affairs on Mount Olympus or down on Earth. She was also 1 of 3 virgin goddesses sworn forever to self-imposed virginity. When the gods Poseidon and Apollo both rivaled for Hestia, she swore upon the head of her brother Zeus to remain forever a virgin. Because of this sacrifice, Zeus granted Hestia the honor of receiving the first rites of every public sacrifice. Because she was so peace-loving and a pacifist, she rarely appears in any myths at all. Hardly any shrines were built to her because every hearth and house in Greece were in essence a shrine to her already.

Nancy was the "first-born" of the Eastland girls, in that she was the first one we met on a story level. She was often kind and mild. She took no part on the battlefield in "The Great Running War", instead gently comforting her fellow goddess Blair upon damage, and pining for peace when conflict was on the scene. Like Hestia, there are hardly any stories about Nancy. Even so, many of the Lost Girl fan base revere her as "the First of the Lost Girls". We always give her this position of honor and respect her as our hallowed introduction to the rich, mythical world of Eastland. Hestia was first of the gods, Nancy was first of the girls. Therefore, I feel it is only right that Nancy be given due honor of receiving the first comparison post.

All hail "Nancia"!

That is truly great, '80s! Both the comparison and the altered (altared?) image.

Thanks, this kinda stuff is such fun! (I also have a book I adore by a psychologist that looks at the Greek gods and goddesses as personality archetypes, and how they relate to us today---fascinating stuff)

Sue Ann (soo ANN) and Hera (HAIR-uh, or HE-ruh)

Hera was was a sister of Zeus and Hestia on Mount Olympus. She was the goddess of marriage, and patron/protector of married women. When Zeus married her she became queen of the gods. As goddess of marriage, Hera's view of matrimony was of course conservative and traditional, and she found favor with those who revered the sanctity of marriage. She scorned promiscuity, detesting Aphrodite's loose morals on sexuality and relationships. Hera also had the greatest wrath of any of the goddesses, and physically attacked fellow goddess Artemis when the gods turned on each other in fighting on Mount Olympus during The Trojan War.

Sue Ann is the most conservative and traditional of the Eastland girls. She strongly believes in what she considers "normal marriages", and would do anything in her power to prevent a divorce ("Keep out of this Blair, we're trying to save a marriage!"). Divorce is a concept which, to her, "sounds awful". Her beliefs on marriage are "It sure is sad when love ends", and "The American way is nice people staying married". She is judgmental toward Blair's attitude of casual sex before marriage, and of other girls being promiscuous. Like Hera, Sue Ann idealizes marriage and vows to not have sex until her wedding night. And Sue Ann can be prone to great wrath. In "The Great Running War" she lashes out to punch Cindy, but accidentally hits Blair, and then, not even giving her accidental victim a second thought, she strives to attack Cindy as best she can, not stopping even as the two girls are forcibly pulled apart. Sue Ann can even be considered "queen of the Lost Girls" as she was given more screen time, more stories, and more dialogue than all the other Lost Girls.

All hail "Sue-Ra", queen of the gods!
