Default Why Florida wasn’t working

In the first three season with James, there were always financial trouble for family including Florida trying to borrow money from relative, or being evicted.

S I always wonder why Florida did not get a [part time] job to help with financial situatin. The kids are all grown up and in school, so “staying at home mom” might not apply here.

I am guessing one reason she was not working was because James being against it. But with kids all grown up and in school and family being strained financially, staying at home didn't seem too smart.

Especially since she had older kids. It wasn't until season 6 when she got a job. That was one of the criticisms of the show during season 1

Default Thanks guys

Maybe Florida being star of show and trying to portrait a low income black family, wanted it that way. If she was also working, the family would not be struggling financially like real family did with only one parent (or one parent family) working.

Which is why I always said this show was in no way connected to Maude and not a spinoff. It was a totally different situation in a new city and she was chosen to star in that show but they gave her the wrong name It was supposed to be

Florida Black
James Black
Thelma Black
Michael Black
James Black Jr

With that kind of last name, I am guessing they would also have a black Jesus portrait on the wall

I agree with you that GoodTimes probably can not be considered a true spinoff. I don't think the GoodTimes creator Eric Monte and Michael Evans had Maude or its costar in mind when they wrote the GT show about family living in the project.

Good Times was written way before Esther Rolle was even considered for having her own show. IT was written by Eric Monte who based on his life growing up in the 60's which in no way had no connection to the Maude situation. Norman Lear just tried to make it a spinoff so he could receive credit. That's why a lot of fans are confused who watched both shows because they be like......"How did Florida move from NY and end up in a poor section of Chicago"? lol

Norman Lear probably tried to capitalize on Maude show popularity to launch GoodTimes by using Florida character. He probably could have used other "strong" TV black female characters such as Mable King (What's Happening) or Theresa Merritt (That's My Mama) in place of Esther Rolle for Florida character and GT show would have been as good.

Or atleast have them keep their same names and have the show based in NY so it could maintain a connection to Maude.

Florida couldn't get a job due to anger-management issues.

I think James had more anger-management issues than Florida since it was Florida most of time trying to tame James anger in the first couple of season. Calling her a strong headed women probably would be more appropriate.

I think that poster was just joking that she had anger issues because of this video!!

As we all know, Florida was very peaceful and level headed ! The video of course was when James had died and she just broke down while alone in the kitchen. It was a really powerful, sad scene!!

So the poster put one on me and its not even April fools day

I agree that was a powerful scene and it does mimic real life. Some people that lose a love one don't accept the tragedy and don't break down until couple days later when they are alone with their thoughts.
