just saw this episode on Antenna TV....do you agree or disagree with Archie that Paul & Robin weren't legally married?

They weren't married. That was the whole point of the show. In the episode, Paul referred to Robin as his 'old lady' which to everyone in the show meant they weren't married. At that time in real life, using that expression meant you were married. Maybe it had something to do with the censors.

This episode annoys me to no end. I say Archie showed more patience than those two morons ever deserved. If it were my house, I would have called the cops and had the two flea bags thrown out on their asses! Case closed. Hell, it got so bad even pain-in-the-ass Meathead was on Archie side, showing some mercy for him and his aching toe!
There's no such thing as a bad episode of All In The Family. |

That was the toe spasm episode? Now that bugged me. Number one, the toe spasms were supposed to be such a regular occurrence that Edith timed them but they never happened in any other episode. And number two, it was every eleven minutes, but of course in reruns I timed it and it wasn't. |

As much as they tried to get the audience to try to identify against Archie here by his insisting that he couldn't let two legally unwed folks spend the night together under his roof, I have to admit that they were very poor guests.
First of all, despite the fact that she'd never met any of them before, Robin arrived at the door barefoot directly from the mean Queens streets with no footwear in sight (and the feet looked downright filthy) . Would it have killed her to wear sandals until she at least had gotten permission from hosts to remove them? Secondly, without even attempting to ask, Robin burned incense. While they tried to make Archie look hypocritical to object to it while smoking a cigar, again, it was HIS house and if he didn't want the place to smell 'like a house of ill refute' that was entirely his call. For the record, I very much dislike BOTH kinds of smoke and won't let either of them reek under my roof. Oh, and Archie WAS willing to let them bunk 'dorm style' with Mike and Paul in one spot while Gloria and Robin was in the other spot but Robin and Mike's pal adamantly refused. Come on! They were lucky Archie didn't call the cops on them to have them thrown out of his house for trespassing! They even dug in their heels by refusing Archie's offer of then-generous offer of $10 to stay in a motel just to get them out of there! I have to wonder what they thought they could accomplish by staying in this spot with a the host so hostile to their presence . Oh, and let's not forget that Archie did NOT invite them but that Mike just sprang first his own friend Paul who 'dropped by' and then tried to insist that the friend and Robin needed to stay the night at the Bunker house. In the end Mike and Gloria likely blew the $10 on cab fare to/from JFK where Robin and Mike's friend had to bunk on benches until their Europe-bound plane took off (and did Robin manage to produce footwear to board the plane or did she and Mike's friend just get grounded by her refusal to compromise on that?) . Despite the fact that Paul had been his Best Man, the Stivics dropping them off at the airport seems to have been the very last Paul and Robin were ever heard from by anyone in the Bunker House. |
