Default General Viewing Discussion

Since Eights and I are in different viewing binges I thought I'd start a thread where I can place a few thoughts of my own.

I finally saw the season 5 finale flashback episode where the lost girls can be seen! I believe Blair saying Sue Ann in a flashback is the first time we hear her name said by anyone since season 1! Also Tootie says her first "Theres gonna be trooooooubllllllllle" since season 2! Mr Bradley was the only season 1 cast member to speak in any flashback.

Poor Cindy doesn't get her name mentioned at all between Dope and TLC. Nancy and Molly both got mentioned by name in their returns.

And when she comes back, she has a different last name. Much like Geri, actually.

Good catch. She was Geri Warner in season 2 and then Geri Tyler in her last episode in season 5. I have digital copies of every episode on my computer so it's easy and quick for me to discover these things when mentioned

Makes sense since Geri's mother and Blair's mother were sisters. They wouldn't have the same last name.

Nice!

Yeah, I don't deserve actual credit for noticing. Geri mentions it in her book, as one of the things that bothered her about being on FOL: originally, she was Geri Warner, cousin to Blair on Blair's father's side. Then in the last episode she's in, she was suddenly Geri Tyler, Blair's cousin on her mother's side. She talked with the producers about it before the episode taped, but made no headway.

Because the producers were offering her fewer and fewer episodes per season, the name change fed into her overall feelings about the show, as they naturally would when you feel like you know your character better than the producers, who don't bother to even give your character a consistent last name.

Ultimately, Geri turned down the last episode they gave her, and I can understand why.

They had the same last name in season 2, which is weird since you mentioned they're related by their mothers. Warner is Blair's dads last name. Geri has no Warner blood in her so how did she get the last name Warner in season 2? Did Geri's mom marry one of David's relatives? That's odd to me now that it's been mentioned.

So they wanted her on after the episode where she organized the charity dinner?

Yeah, in season five, Geri did three episodes: "What Price Glory", "Star at Langley", and "All By Herself". She's mentioned in several interviews that the producers offered her only one episode the following season, so she turned them down. It felt insulting to her because the producers had been calling her a "cast member" ; in seasons 3 and 4, she had done four episodes per season. But there's no way anyone would consider her a cast member with one episode per season.

Geri didn't understand that actors on this show could be (and were) dropped at a moment's notice, and that the show which had broken new ground in its early years would later avoid taking risks for fear of tackling real issues in the later seasons. Actors getting dropped happened again and again on FOL.
