Default Lin Bolen

Some of the mistakes Lin Bolen made included...

She canned "Concentration" - only to see it move on into a predominately evening and much higher rated version in syndication for five more years.(the NBC station in Asheville picked it up over "Somerset"- and saw a big ratings increase.)

Next, showing almost unbelievable tastlesness, she canceled Dinah Shore's show - the very day Shore won an Emmy - only to see Dinah's audience flood CBS's "Joker's Wild" in protest - while Dinah packed up for the CBS and ABC affiliates for 6 more years.

"Celebrity Sweepstakes", didn't so much better, but ate into "Joker's" audience enough that CBS canceled - only to see TJW arise again in syndication in the evenings in LA, NY, Chi, and SF, but with morning time slots in biggies like Phoenix and Asheville(where it gave "Ryan's Hope" such a big lead-in- that the ABC soaps benefited.) That was around the time of "Luke and Laura" on "General Hospital" too.

If wanted to keep "Concentration". Getting rid of Bob Clayton would be one thing, but getting rid of the organ would be the other.

Was she the one who fired Jacqueline Courtney in 1975 from Another World? or was that someone else.

You could also admit that she didn't like Jeopardy because it attracted an older audience. She moved the show to 10:30 and 1:30 ET and in January, 1975, she canceled Jeopardy. The following Monday, Wheel of Fortune debuted.

Bolen didn't care for the old fashioned looking sets on Concentration, Sale of the Century and the Who, What or Where Game. All of them were axed in her regime.

I don't know, but that was a big mistake. They could have milked that Alice/Rachel thing for years.

The Another World head writer felt Rachel/Steve/Alice was played out and moved on to a different kind of triangle: Rachel/Mac/Iris. It was probably a smart move to change, before people got too tired of Rachel vs. Alice. Besides, the actress playing Rachel had been replaced, and the new one wasn’t as good at being bad as the previous one had been.

I can’t fault Lin Bolen for canceling Dinah Shore. I never liked Dinah’s show, with her quavering voice and dull guests.

Yeah Robin Strasser really had evil Rachel down. They probably hired Victoria Wyndham with the idea of taming her gradually.

The Iris/Mac/Rachel storyline was brilliant, also. They even wove Steve Frame and Alice back into it at some point. David Canary played Steve the second time around; I think Jackie Courtney returned briefly, but another actress ultimately played Alice--she didn't last long, IIRC. Finally the Matthews family, one of the originals, disappeared from Bay City.

If i was alive, i'd likely watch Joker's Wild instead hosted by Jack Barry- would have preferred Jack's caricatured-touching-on-phony level of excitement or the "Joker-Joker...." moments instead of Dinah's quavering voice and dull guests.

Actually, they did not intend to tame Rachel gradually. It's just that head writer Harding Lemay so loved Ms. Wyndham's performance as Rachel, that he decided to tame her in order to better accommodate Ms. Wyndham.
