In my two most recent threads, I mentioned the fact that, in the episode that was on this past Thursday, Blythe Danner guest starred as Will's Mom. At various points in the episode, she expressed the notion that Will was quite a disappointment to her. She said that most of her female friends who have a gay son looked at his mother as his best friend. This being the case, she felt sad that Will did not express the type of love and affection towards her that other gay boys and men expressed towards their mother. This reality was really put to the test when her dog died. She did not feel that Will was really there for her. At the end, she and Will talked the situation out and came to an understanding. After their heart-to-heart, Will gave his mother a big hug. After they had hugged for about ten seconds, Will's Mom said, "okay, that's enough. We're not Lutheran"! At this point, the laugh track went on. I do not think that I get the joke. I do not know what being Lutheran has to do with a man hugging his mother. If anyone here has studied comparative religions and can explain that remark to me, I would really like to hear from you.
