Smile Max would be retiring this year !!!

Michael Lembeck is 70 now but Max is only 65 ! In Season 5 in the "Male Jealousy " ep it was mentioned he was 26 , five years younger than he was really at 31 , that was in 1979. So he would be 65 now and ready to retire !

But retire from where ? As we know he and Barbara worked at a Travel agency which are now pretty much a thing of the past in the age of the internet, people booking their own flights, cruises and hotel reservations online ! So as of a decade or even longer when Travel agencies totally became extinct , when Gonigan Travel closed down where would Max and Barbara have gone to work after that?

Or maybe some have stayed open, were able to survive? Was Gonigan Travel one of them? Any thoughts on this or ideas what other career path the two pursued ?

I always thought that Max was an airline pilot.

He was a flight attendant but he always had a dream of being a writer! Julie thought he was really good with his writing and persuaded him to quit the steady , stable airline job (You know how Julie was, reckless and spontaneous )and pursue his dream of writing ! Well of course you can't expect to be a great author and sell your work overnight, so needless to say the couple was broke a lot! Than Julie yelled at him in the "Bedtime story" ep. "Well if you would quit pretending to be a writer and get a real job" !!! Well that stung and poor Max went and got a job as a waiter !

To make a long story short, Barbara was offered a temporary job that ended up becoming permanent at a Travel agency (she was very tired of her job at a sporting goods store ) , Max also was offered to come on board because of his airline experience ! And when the series ended Max and Barbara were travel agents!!

Here they are at work !

Lunch Break!!! Max was supposed to be out buying lunch for them , but he got sidetracked at the grocery store buying things for the baby and forgot to pick up something for him and Barb to eat ! So they ended up eating baby food for lunch!

If the travel agency would have shut down (RIP Mr. Gonigan), Barbara would have become a chef

I was thinking that!! Barbara being already a good cook, really started to get into it and decided to hone her cooking skills by taking some cooking classes and also a restaurant management course! And with Max's experience as a waiter they decide to open a restaurant together !!! A family business type deal and they name it Royvath's (a combination of both their last names ) or BarMax's ?

That works. Remember the gourmet meal she made for Mark (“and for dessert, a simple flan”) And the birthday cake for Schneider? Plus, to help Max they hire the snooty waiter (that whole priest thing didn’t really work out ).

Name of restaurant? MaxBarbaracue. Slogan— Best grill in Indianapolis.
Okay, maybe not

And now with Max retired, he still is part owner but not actually working anymore , who else is helping Barbara run the restaurant? Maybe a grown Annie and if Max and his second wife (the lady from the duck pond) had kids which would be adults now, maybe they could be working there too !

And did Max do anymore writing! Was he successful at that too?

The only thing I’m confused about here is, with Michael Lembeck still working at 70, why is Max retiring at 65. Does Indy have a mandatory retirement age?

But nice cake

Well because Max is a fictional person. Middle class, possibly upper middle class but I mean not a multi rich famous person with a fun , cool job in the entertainment field like Michael Lembeck the millionaire actor/ turned director! Most everyday people are looking forward to not having to work anymore, unless they have to if their social security isn't that much and they need supplemental income. I'm being told by some older people I know that a lot people actually do retire now at 67, in order to get their maximum social security benefit !!

It's a sad state of affairs when you get older and still have to work to make ends meet because of this horrible economy! Hopefully Max DID get to retire this year! Unless of course he was having a ball at the restaurant he and Barbara owned and is physically fit and WANTS to keep working by his own choice (like Michael Lembeck) and not for financial reasons!!

How about Mark? I just googled Boyd Gaines and he actually really is 65 , born in May of 1952 ! So Boyd is of retirement age, but how old was Mark supposed to be ? Would he still be about that age? Or was he supposed to be younger, closer to Barbara's age? Because he didn't look real young, he and Michael pretty much looked around the same age!

So would Mark be retiring. Would he have had a very thriving dental practice and be a very rich man at this point?

Thoughts on this?
