Music The Eagles' 'Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)' is the Best-Selling Album of all Time

The Eagles Pass Michael Jackson for the Best-Selling Album of All Time
by Christian Holub
August 21, 2018

The Eagles have flown past Michael Jackson’s 'Thriller' to take the record for the best-selling album of all time.

Recording Industry Association of America confirmed to the Associated Press on Monday that the band’s 1976 compilation album, 'Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)', has been certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of the album have reached 38 million copies.

That officially puts it ahead of 'Thriller', which has been certified 33x platinum.

That’s not even the limit of the Eagles’ record-selling dominance. In addition to grabbing the No. 1 spot, the band also has the third-best-selling album of all time: 1977’s 'Hotel California', which is now 26x platinum.

We are grateful for our families, our management, our crew, the people at radio and, most of all, the loyal fans who have stuck with us through the ups and downs of 46 years. It’s been quite a ride,” Don Henley said in a statement.

This is the first time RIAA has tallied sales for 'Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975)' since 2006, when it was 29x platinum. Since then, there have been some changes in the way the company tallies platinum status.

One platinum marker used to be equivalent to selling one million albums, but starting in 2013 the RIAA has incorporated streaming numbers from YouTube, Spotify, and other digital music services into their sales figures. In this context, 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to one sale. 'Thriller‘s' numbers were updated last year.

Though sometimes mocked in pop culture (most famously in The Big Lebowski), the Eagles have enjoyed a resurgence of interest lately thanks to the two-part documentary series History of the Eagles.

It seemed that everyone had a copy of The Eagles album Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 when it first came out in 1976 and there's something about The Eagles that keeps fans very excited. Is it the classic rock style or is it the catchy sing along lyrics or all of the above? My uncles had The Eagles album Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 in their 8-track collection and it's no doubt and no secret that this album is one of the best selling greatest hits albums of The Eagles because it contains some of the main songs which made The Eagles big stars and is one The Eagles album a fan of The Eagles simply cannot live without in their music collection. I also wonder if it's now a collector's item due to the tragic death of Glenn Frey in 2016? And Asylum Records has released a new remastered version of this album on CD that was a Walmart exclusive to honor the release of a The Eagles concert DVD also sold at Walmart too

Yes, I heard about that, too. First heard it on the radio then looked online.

Great news! The Eagles are my favorite '70s band and I never did like M. Jackson's music.

From what I've read, M.J. had the top spot from 2009 until early this year and the Eagles surpassed him as mentioned.

What? I could swear I heard that The Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) was the best selling album of all time several years ago. I mean like in the 1990s some time. Oh well it's still true then LOL.

You're correct. They have the greatest selling album of the 20th Century. No matter what happens in the future, that can't change. They held the title of greatest-selling of all time until 2009, when Thriller sold more upon the death of MJ.
