If a child is shy at the age of two...

In the past few weeks, I saw a relative of mine that's 2 1/2 has been shy and isn't that talkative or sociable...I think he has autism, but I dunno if his parents know about this...

My friends had a daughter who didn't speak that well when she was 2. She's now 30 and hasn't shut up since.

It's hard to tell. There are usually more signs than just being shy or don't talk much. Maybe it's just the way he is.

No, it varies. I was very shy and didn't socialize much but am not autistic. I was talking though by then and even reading to some extent.

When I was a child I was painfully shy and didn't socialize with other children, but I wasn't autistic. Not all children are gregarious and talkative.

I'm no doctor, okay? I only had a simple question...I only wanted to know since I too have autism...and shyness and not talking are two of the traits!

I know at least two people with Asperger's. They're anything but shy and they never stop talking.

Telling someone you think that there is something wrong with their child is a good way to make enemies.

They have a family doctor, so maybe they can tell him or her!

I don't know much about Autism but the word seems to be being thrown around a lot. I never even heard of Autism until just a few years ago ("Raiman" being the first time) A lot of the time I feel it's just a cover for something else that they can't name.. Like Alzheimer's. I think that a lot of what's being called Alzheimer's is Dementia . I personally know a lady who had Alzheimer's and what she had was a lot different than Dementia. What I'm trying to say is that people/doctor's are just putting labels on things. There seems to be a lot of Autism diagnoses which we had never heard of before. Why all of a sudden so much of it going around? Is it really Autism?

Good point Marlene, I know I thought of that too!! Seems like their is an awful lot of autism lately !!

Dementia is the umbrella term and Alzheimer's is a specific type of dementia. Other types of dementia are Lewy Body, Vascular, Frontotemporal...

It is much too soon to tell. No child gets diagnosed at such a young age.

I'm autistic (Asperger's), and I can't help feeling a bit offended by this post. You state from the start that you don't know much about autism, and yet, you keep on saying all these things, which are just wrong. Autism is a very real condition for some of us, and I don't like it when people say it's just "a word being thrown around a lot". Or that doctors don't know what they're talking about, and want to put labels on people. And if more and more people are diagnosed with different forms of autism these days, that is because experts have become so much better at seeing that some people need help.

Well...I was diagnosed with autism at the age of 1 or 2.

But right now, my dad refuses to talk to my cousin since he thinks he's an ******* because he'll want a property that's eyed on most of the family and he got another call from a guy younger than me who acted like an ******* saying "what kind of price can I get from this place if the grass is too high"?

Should my dad overprice them or find a land appraisal?

I am so sorry. I didn't mean to be offensive. What I am getting at is here in the U. S. a lot of people are getting social security for their children because they are supposedly autistic. I'm just suspicious that a lot of fraud is going on.
