"Timeless" Canceled by NBC after 2 Seasons, May Get Series Finale Movie

But what about Rufus? This is bad news for "Timeless" fans — for a second consecutive year, NBC has canceled the time-travel series.

This time, NBC postponed the renewal decision until after the May upfronts; it comes just days before the options of the series’ cast are set to expire.

That was in part because the network and "Timeless" producer Sony Pictures TV had been discussing doing a two-hour movie that would resolve the cliffhanger in the recent Season 2 finale and wrap the stories on the show, giving fans closure.

I hear the two sides have not been able to make the economics work so far but conversations continue, and NBC appears interested.

The new cancellation of "Timeless" will be hard to swallow for fans who had been campaigning for a renewal, flooding NBC’s Twitter feed with #RenewTimeless messages.

For a second year in a row, "Timeless" ranked as No.1 on USA Today’s Save our Shows poll.

"Timeless" Reactions: Creators & Star On Show’s (Second) Cancellation: “This Is A Sad Day”

Reaction is coming in to NBC’s cancellation (again) of cult favorite time-travel drama series "Timeless".

The show’s co-creator Shawn Ryan was the first to share his disappointment on Twitter. “This is a sad day for the writers, actors, crew and especially the viewers of Timeless,” Ryan wrote. “We are all extremely proud of what we made and know that it was more than just a show for so many of our fans. It became a passion and a cause for many of them.”

He continued: “We’re proud of the impact @NBCTImeless had on so many people – the students who embraced history as a result of our show, the people who were inspired by our stories of inclusion and acceptance. We saw your tweets and were inspired by you.”

“If NBC is sincere in wanting a 2 hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it,” he added. “We don’t want the journeys of Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus and the others to end yet.”

Co-creator Eric Kripke, tweeted “Gutted by this, guys, I know you are too. Behind the scenes, Sony has been trying hard to set it up elsewhere, but no luck so far. I think this 2 hour movie is our best shot. We’re ready to make it if @nbc really wants it. Let ’em know how you feel.”

Kripke then thanked “cast, writers, crew and most all all, the #clockblockers for your brilliance & passion.”

Star Matt Lanter tweeted, “I love you #Clockblockers. You’ve fought so hard and deserve so much more.”

I am so disappointed in hearing this. Timeless was my favorite show on television and was hoping another network would pick it up.

Same here. They ended with that cliffhanger and I sure want to see how it plays out. Maybe they will do some type of follow up with a special encore episode or a movie.

Efforts To Find Another Home for "Timeless" Fail, Talks with NBC for Movie Continue

There was only a sliver of hope, but it’s now official: Sony Pictures TV’s attempts to find a new network home for "Timeless" following the time-travel drama’s cancellation by NBC have ended without a deal.

Series’ co-creator/executive producer Shawn Ryan gave fans the update on Twitter, thanking them for their unwavering support.

"1. @SPTV has notified @TheRealKripke and me that efforts to land #Timeless at another network have sadly failed. While Sony will continue to look at any and all options, actor deals have expired and it appears there will be no Season 3 or beyond."

"2. Discussions still take place between @SPTV and @NBC about a possible 2 hour movie to conclude the #Timeless story, but there are considerable economic obstacles that make it an uncertainty. We will update you when we know more."

"3. @TheRealKripke, me, the cast, writers & crew of #Timeless want to send our immense thanks and gratitude to all the #ClockBlockers who fought so hard for this show. You made a second season possible and gave us hope for a Season 3. We wish the news was better. We love you all."
