Smile Now Dat's A Nice

Watched the commercial DVD version of the Thanksgiving episode "Hazel and The Vanishing Hero" with Leif Erikson, and just wanted to comment how nice it was to see a complete UNCUT version of this episode instead of the highly edited Antenna TV version. Fiirst of all there the very opening of the show which is never shown on TV anymore with a little girl wanting to buy Lemonade from Harold's stand. Then there was the real Thanksgiving scene that was cut from the TV version, at the end they're all in the kitchen with Mr. Griffin being funny and you can see Don DeFore & Leif Erikson in the background genuinely laughing at what the Mr. Griffin actor was doing.

I completely missed this with many show's I never saw until they came to Antenna; but when I was watching some All In The Family ep on Antenna's marathon, I realized they cut out some great endings. That does kind of suck, so with shows I REALLY treasure DVD sets may be the way to go.

I still like Antenna though; but not as ardently as I used to.

Thumbs up I Am Thankful for Antenna Too, just hope folks know uncut versions are available

Oh, yeah, while I'm familiar with Hazel from it's showings in the 1960's I am very happy that Antenna TV is here, without it young people of today wouldn't even know great shows like Hazel even exist. Better an edited version of the show to newbies than no version at all. Hopefully when they see these shows they'll want to see them uncut, if they even realize they're only seeing edited versions on TV. But these old shows back on the air is the perfect thing for vintage TV to be more widely known instead of just to us old folks.

That's actually a very strong episode. It's one of the instances where Hazel accepts what Mr. B says about what happened during George's ninth birthday party; then sets about to prove it. It is also notable by the fact that Dorothy is quite capable of correcting Harold when Harold is in the wrong. Granted Harold is a child, but he was being a little bratty about his dad. Unfortunately, I've never seen the uncut version which sounds like it would be even stronger.

On the syndication episodes those opening scenes are almost always cut--same with Dennis the Menace.

When the syndication prints for season 1 were redone after Sony did the DVD set, they added the opening scene back in, as well as the Screen Gems statue at the end (which had been previously crudely cut out). All the other seasons are still the 'old' syndication episodes, since Sony didn't do those DVD sets. But, on season 1, Antenna now shows the opening scene.

I'll be anxious to see this episode in a few days...it'll be nice to see it unedited off the DVD.

Thought Hold On Thar

Actually, the commercial DVD sets of Hazel are all (except for a couple) uncut. I think there may be 2 episodes that are 22 min. syndicated version, but the rest are all full 25 min. versions.

I've practically memorized Hazel after seeing it every week since the late '80's so when the commercial DVD sets came out, the biggest thrill for me with them was seeing the many different scenes I haven't seen since the original '60's broadcasts and those I had forgotten. Each and every episode has some parts that are newly restored and not just the opening few minutes either, many times it's just brief scenes, a minute or so, but they're back and they're never seen on TV today.

The commercial Hazel DVD sets are worth getting for the many uncut scenes now available to enjoy. I'd call them "restored", but the negative about the DVD sets is that the color quality on a lot of the episodes is NOT great, in fact on some it's greenish or purpleish. I wish the films and colors were restored, but I'm happy to at least finally see uncut episodes even if a few are green and purple.
