TV The Goldbergs

The Goldbergs ran from 1949 to 1956. It is one of the very first Sitcoms to be aired. And it is aired live. It was very popular. It was on CBS then NBC and was finally canceled due to Dumont Network getting into dire financial straights. One person stated it was a short lived program. I don't think 7 years as the #1 or top 10 program is a short run.

The Goldbergs

Sorry, but it appears that there is no place to discuss the Goldbergs under 1950s TV. I wished they would had a Misc type area there.

I found it! You can talk about the show here:

The Goldbergs Message Board

I think the person that called it a short lived program might have been thinking of the new Goldbergs sitcom that will debut on ABC in a couple of weeks which has no connection at all with the original show. I predict that it won't last for more than a couple of months. It will be over faster than you can say, "Yoo Hoo Molly!"

I don't know. But in the 50s, any program that could make 6 or 7 years was extremely long running. The comment was made before the new Goldbergs was announced. They believed that it had to run for 10 or 20 years to not be considered short lived. In reality, if it made it past 6 months in the early 50s, it was considered a hit.

My mom mentioned watching this show on Netflix the other week. She had actually never heard of it, so I'm guessing it wasn't syndicated very much after it aired.

The first few seasons were live, so there was no way to syndicate the show. Only 71 episodes are known to exist on film.

The early ones were transferred to film using Kinescope where the TV screen in the Studio was shot using a film camera. They were all done that way until they started going straight to film later on in the 50s.

All were on film. But like many other tV shows from the early Kinescope days, many of the films were lost, destroyed or allowed to deteriorate until it was no longer viewable. The Networks should have been held criminally liable for this poor action. Instead, we rewarded them with the most draconian copyright laws on the face of the earth.

You're on the wrong Goldbergs board.

Someone posted a link to tv shows and this is the first one I watched. I liked it and I'm going to watch more of the episodes.

When I'd seen this forum I had wondered about the above. I'd wondered if the current series was a reprise. I think I would like the original series.
