I owned the 9-disc set for many years, and thought that this was the best treatment that this series was ever going to get. Then, I discovered that there was a 16-disc set, so I decided to buy it (and it was a lot cheaper than $45).
Well, I just got it in the mail a few days ago and it is a major improvement over the 9-disc set. There are 5 episodes per disc. I think the problem with the 9-disc set is that they crammed ten episodes on one disc, so there is a lot of compression and pixelation. Some of the episodes on the 9-disc set have tracking problems. Also, on the 9-disc set, I watching some episodes with ear phones, and I noticed that the sound was only coming out of one speaker. So if you're thinking about buying this series, I recommend the 16-disc set. The picture is really not that bad considering it was recorded on videotape in the 1980s from a 16mm film print source. The sound comes out of both speakers. It doesn't look like we will be seeing this series on TV or official DVD any time soon. UPDATE (8/30/12): One more thing I noticed: The 16-disc has the best picture quality, but the episodes are mostly the edited 22 minute versions from CBN. The 9-disc set has poor picture quality, but it seems to contain the most unedited episodes. Some of the episodes are 25 minutes long and were taped from different TV stations that aired the show prior to CBN, or from 16mm film. |
