"Starsky & Hutch" Reboot in the Works from James Gunn
"Starsky & Hutch" Reboot in the Works from Guardians of the Galaxy Director
by Dave Nemetz August 24, 2017 Time to drag that old Ford Gran Torino out of the garage: A reboot of the ’70s cop show "Starsky & Hutch" is in development. The reboot comes from Sony Pictures TV Studios with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn attached to co-write the pilot and serve as executive producer. (Gunn might direct the pilot as well, depending on his availability.) The new take on is described as a “character-driven, one-hour procedural,” and is currently looking for a home on both broadcast and streaming outlets. Sony TV recently sold a similar reboot to CBS in "S.W.A.T.", the Shemar Moore-led cop drama debuting this fall. The original "Starsky & Hutch" aired on ABC from 1975 to 1979, and starred Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul as the titular California detectives. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson teamed up for a big-screen remake in 2004. http://tvline.com/2017/08/24/starsky...ot-james-gunn/ |

If they are going to do it, they should make it back into a drama and not a comedy. See what happened to the film version of Chips? A drama yes but add some humor.

"Starsky & Hutch" Reboot from James Gunn Lands at Amazon
by Nellie Andreeva August 31, 2017 "Starsky & Hutch" a reboot of the 1970s buddy cop series that comes from Guardians of the Galaxy franchise writer-director James Gunn, writing duo Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn and Sony Pictures TY Studios, has landed at Amazon for development with a script-to-series commitment. A co-production between Amazon and Sony TV, the revamp will be a continuation of the original series, a character-driven one hour procedural that deconstructs the buddy cop genre in the same way that James Gunn has done with the science fiction genre with Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn’s brother Brian and cousin Mark are writing based on an idea that James Gunn developed in between writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and starting pre-production on the film. “When I was a kid, Starsky & Hutch was the first ‘adult’ show I ever saw, and I fell in love,” said James Gunn. “It instilled in me a lifelong love of gritty street shows, of killer 70’s threads, and muscle cars. So when Neal Mortiz asked me if I wanted to be a part of an all new Starsky & Hutch on TV, I was instantly intrigued. I teamed up with the two writers I trusted most in the world to work with us, my brother Brian Gunn and my cousin Mark Gunn and together we came up with a show that I’m really proud of. At Amazon I believed we would have the most freedom to create something that is different, challenges the audience, and that strays outside the parameters of genre from time to time.” “Chekhov said if you have a gun in the room, it’s going to go off. We can’t wait to see what three Gunns do with Starsky & Hutch,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR, Amazon Studios. “We are thrilled to be working with Amazon on this unique approach to a character driven procedural,” said Jason Clodfelter, Co-President, Sony Pictures Television Studios. “The Gunns completely surpassed our expectations while paying respect to the original.” http://deadline.com/2017/08/starsky-...tv-1202159281/ |

I think a Starsky & Hutch reboot is the most pointless idea that Sony Pictures ever came up with. The Deadline article stated that the reboot will be "a continuation of the original 1970s series". If that's true, then I think this means that the people behind this reboot are going to have the original series's stars appear in the reboot somehow.

I feel rather indifferent about this, and I love "Starsky and Hutch."
Maybe it's because there have been so many reboots of different shows and movies. I'm slightly curious about who they will get to play the leads and about whether it will be set in the 70s or in present time, but it will probably just get me nostalgic for the original. I know a lot of fans get outraged by remakes, and I admit I am definitely not a fan of the S&H movie, but that was because the whole thing was turned into a joke and the casting of the leads was for comedic effect. If they take it seriously and realize that the depth of feelings the characters had for each other is what made the show great, maybe it won't be so very awful. |
