They have a few similarities: Davis came in halfway through Wings and Helen Chapel became his fiancee. Helen broke off the engagement to start a relationship with Joe Hackett, Helen and Joe were married for a few seasons. Donny came in halfway through Frasier and Daphne Moon became his fiancee. She left him at the altar to start a relationship with Niles Crane, Niles and Daphne were married for a few seasons.

Seeing as the Lynch season came before the Donny Douglas seasons, I'd say Donny Douglas is the Davis Lynch of Frasier.

I've not watched much "Frasier" (I just can't get into it). Was Donny at least a better boyfriend to Daphne, than Davis was to Helen?

I would say yes. Donny was a more likable character, Saul Rubinek was also a better actor than Mark Herelik. But Niles had been pining for Daphne from the start of the show and fans wanted them together.
