Hi everybody
I am writing a paper about the translation of humor in King of Queens (from English into German). In the first scene of the "roast chicken" episode, Doug and Carrie are outside of their house and it is raining heavily. Carrie takes Doug's bunch of keys and asks him: "What are you doing with all these keys? What are you, Schneider? Which one is the house key?" Does anyone know who Schneider is? What does this allusion mean? In the German version it is translated as "What are you doing with all these keys? Are you working in a jail?" Is Schneider a famous jailor? Or does it mean something completely different? It would be very nice if someone could help me. Thanks! |

Dwayne Schneider was the landlord on the popular long-running sitcom One Day at a Time, in which Ann Romano and her daughters live in his apartment building. As a landlord he carried lots of keys. Schneider was played by Pat Harrington, Jr. He usually wore a white t-shirt with a vest, and he kept a pack of cigarettes rolled into one of the short sleeves.
The jail reference in the translation is incorrect. Carrie's comment was an allusion to the sitcom character. http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0038256/ |

Yes, it's a reference to the sitcom character "Schneider" from one day at a time. He used to carry all his keys on a big chain on his hip.
I even use the phrase whenever I see someone with a lot of keys on their keychain (for the same reason Carrie did). I don't know if it would translate properly for German audiences to be a joke. (Unless they're familiar with the character too). Maybe the best you could do is translate it to say "What are you - a building superintendent?" or something similar. |

Yes! But he wasn't the Landlord, but the Super. And he would sometimes be annoying as he would just come in the apartment, of Ann Romano and her Daughters a lot and unannounced!

Pat also popped up on Roseaane, as Schneider. A restaurant was opening across the street from The Lunchbox, and they were competition. To make matters worse for the Lunchbox, besides this restaurant being nicer, they had a "celebrity" Schneider to be at their grand opening!! Jackie was star struck but Roseaane treated him like he was a traitor !!
