I think they did more with Spence. He seemed more three dimensional than Adam did. With that said, Adam had some great moments on the show. I don't think Spence would have worked if he came into the show as just some guy who befriended the gang. Making him Ellen's cousin helped a lot. So Ellen had a past with Spence just like she had a past with Adam. I wish Adam would have made a guest appearance in the final season. I'd like to see what his reaction to Ellen being gay would have been.

My vote goes to Jeremy Piven.

I know this thread is 6 years old, but I couldn't help myself.

This is such a hard choice. Do I choose the one that I think worked better, or the character I'd actually want to know in real life?

I think Spence worked better with the ensemble, but I think Adam was a more likable person. I had a huge crush on Jeremy Piven when I was in my 20s, but looking back, my crush has shifted to Arye Gross. He's just adorable, whereas Piven is all flash. Arye looks like the kind of guy you actually might meet, the kind of guy who would actually come home every night!

And...Arye looked great in those snug jeans they always put him in!

Arye! I never liked Spence. He was a jerk and was not funny. He was so not like his cousin Ellen.

I would definitely say Adam. I loved him and was devastated when he left. HOWEVER, recently I have been rewatching Paige/Spence's relationship. They really did have amazing chemistry. Did they eventually break up on the show?

Paige and Spence did indeed break up but it's so forgettable. In the last season, Spence became a recurring character (along with Audrey and Joe), and he was only seen once after the break up episode. And it wasn't even "the break up episode." Their break up was the b-plot. Paige talked to Ellen about possibly ending things with Spence, and then during the ending credits, Spence tells Ellen that he'll always love Paige but he never truly saw her as the woman he was going to marry. Then she called wanting some more break up sex and he went running to her place. So the break up didn't even happen on screen.

As for me, I've preferred Spence most of my viewing experience, but I've gotta say, this time around, I really liked Adam. I'm watching all the episodes in order on DVD (I used to watch the series in reruns on Lifetime in the late '90s when I was in high school). I don't know, I guess my tastes have changed. I still love this show but now I'm more of an Adam fan.
