Joseph Wapner, the retired judge from "The People's Court," has died.

Wapner debuted on the television series in 1981 and remained on the "The People's Court" for 12 years. He was technically America's first reality television star.

Wapner was described as energetic and opinionated. He reviewed thousands of court cases during his career. Before his stint as a TV star, he served as a judge on the LA County Superior Court for 20 years.

The Los Angeles-born star passed away at 97 under hospice care in his home. He was admitted to the hospital last week after experiencing breathing problems and returned home Friday.

Wapner had three children and was married for 70 years.

This is terrible, but he's been out of the public eye for so long, I guess I assumed he had already passed.

RIP. I used to watch his show quite a bit in the early 80's.

My mom and I used to watch Judge Wapner on the original The People's Court and he was so cool as the star and then if my memory serves correctly Judge Wapner also did a court show for Animal Planet with animal cases. Judge Wapner will truly be missed by fans of The People's Court. I wonder because of Judge Wapner's passing The People's Court will do a special tribute episode with clips from Judge Wapner's version of The People's Court and would that be so cool to see?

i never got to see the ones with Judge Wapner! i wasn't even born yet we didn't get cable tv unitl i was in middle school! but i used to watch peoples court with judge Marilyn Milian!! now i think that judge Marilyn Milian gotten mean like judge judy!! sorry i quite watching it when she started acting mean & started screaming at people!! i just quite watching it!!

RIP. Now it's just Doug Llewelyn who's left. Rusty passed in 2002, while announcer Jack Harrell passed in 1999.
