. . . . from when I was a kid and I haven't seen it since. I would love to see this show again just to see how it compares now with what I remember. Did you ever used to really love a TV show or a movie when you were younger and then didn't see it for years and years and years and finally when you get to see it again, it wasn't nearly as good as you remembered it to be??? LOL! That happened to me a couple years back but I can't remember what it was. I think it was a movie. Anyway, I played it up so much to my family, friends, etc. about how great it was and then we sat down to watch it and it really wasn't as good as I remembered it to be and then I felt embarrassed because I played it up so much about how great it was!!! LOL!

I've only seen a handful of episodes I believe this past February when TVLand focused on African American programming for Black History Month. They had a four episode Julia box set. I think I was just young enough to not be aware of the show when it originally aired, so seeing these episodes was new for me. I liked it, it definitely seemed representative of that era.

If you like physical comedy and uproarious humor there's none of that in this show. This is more like a black urban version of the color version of Andy Griffith with a female lead. Gentle g-rated humor with no zany characters. As far as I can remember there was no laugh track. It's quaint and charming in its own way. I had never ever heard of this show until i left the country one year and saw it overseas. I don't know if it did well in reruns here in the USA, but in its first season in 1968-69 it was in the top ten and earned top emmy nominations.
Some blacks hated the show because they thought it wasn't black enough. The same kind of criticism some had of The Cosby Show in the 80s. |
