Justin Lin is Producing a "Knight Rider" Digital Reboot

Justin Lin has picked up a chatty new set of wheels. The Fast and the Furious alum is producing a reboot of the 1980s cop procedural "Knight Rider" with his YouTube channel YOMYOMF, NBCUniversal Brand Development, and Machinima, the video platform announced Tuesday.

The digital series is eyeing a 2017 release date.



“Knight Rider is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact,” Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein said in a statement.

“Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation, and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on reinvigorating Knight Rider for a new generation of fans.”







This is the second stab in recent years at rebooting the NBC franchise that originally starred David Hasselhoff.

The network produced a TV movie in 2008, which served as the pilot for the eventual rebooted series. The series — which featured Val Kilmer voicing of the sentient car KITT and Justin Bruening as the son of Hasselhoff’s character — lasted only 17 episodes.

Two Knight Rider TV movies were produced in the 1990s: Knight Rider 2000 and Knight Rider 2010. A spin-off series, "Team Knight Rider", debuted in 1997 and was canned after 22 episodes.
