I guess with Sanford & Son and shows like that doing very well, was this show ABC's version of a black comedy just to combat the other networks?

ABC's answer to Sanford and Son. Son living with Dad and working in the trash business and on ABC son living with Mom and working in barbershop business.

Pretty much another version of Sanford and Son as previously said here and other boards often called it ABC's Sanford. The junior character added the CBS Good Times aspect to it.
