Thought Davy Jones Says 'The Monkees' Ruined His Acting Career

“ ‘Hey, hey we’re the Monkees’ – it ruined my acting career, basically. All right? But that’s up to me to change that…maybe there was a phone call a couple days ago to go on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ you know? If they would have called me three years ago I would have said ‘yes,’ you know? What am I dancing against – a boxer and a baseball player? Do you know what I mean? I’m a song and dance man, you know?

Oh Lord....he's never happy. I've seen him pre-Monkee on the Farmers Daughter (not literally of course) and Ben Casey. While the latter is pretty good (as good as it can be), I don't think much of his 'acting'. He's great acting as Davy Jones and is loved because of it and the work that he has done.

Excatly.

Another thing, he may think the Monkees ruined his career but he loves those paydays. Everytime there is a Monkees reunion he never says no.

He seems to go back and forth. In his 1987 autobiography, They Made A Monkee Out of Me, he spoke as if he was eternally grateful for his career as a Monkee. As far as I know, Nesmith is the only one who consistently seems embarrassed about being a Monkee. *rolls eyes*.

I think Davy, is at the core, a theatre actor. He was nominated for a Tony for his performance as The Artful Dodger in Oliver! when he was like 15-17 years old so maybe once one has known that sort of "sophisticated" acting, maybe a sitcom doesn't measure up. Who knows?

But geez! Accept it already, dude! You are still counted as one of the top 5 teen idols of all time and very much beloved by millions as an entertainer. What an honor.

So are you saying Davy is the Robert Reed of the Monkees? Mike is another goofy one in print, depends on the day and what mood he is in when asked. Either the Monkees were good to him or he's closed off. I don't know or pretend to know what these guys are really like but it's just kinda funny.

For a show that ruined his career, he made a decent living and became a beloved teen idol for generations, so it could not have been that bad. RIP Davy.

He doesn't have to carry any worries about that anymore but he still took the part in that sitcom so many years ago, for the success that it brought him.
