Thought "Dear John" Was Very Underrated....IMO

I don't think the show is running anywhere in my area now, but I remember really enjoying it. Judd Hirsch is a very underrated comedic talent.

Dear John was one of the most underrated shows of the 1980's. The whole cast was great. Judd Hirch was always a great comedic actor. He reminds me of Bob Newhart. He doesn't have to say anything. He can make you laugh just by his facial expressions. I don't think NBC really treated the show that well. After it left Thursday, it moved all over the schedule. It finally ended up on Friday opposite TGIF where it died. I didn't even see all the episodes of the last season. It hasn't really been rerunned much around here. I probably haven't seen it since the mid 1990's.

Cool

Dear John was a great ensemble comedy, anchored of course by Judd Hirsch. I also really enjoyed the work on this series by actors Jere Burns and Harry Groener and by veteran character actress Billie Bird.

Wasn't Jere Burns' character kind of like TBNS' Elliot Carlin?

I really liked Dear John; you're right, it didn't get very good treatment from NBC (then again, isn't that a given nowadays?).

I probably last saw it in syndication in the late 90's. I'd love for it to make a return someday, and it would also be nice to see a DVD release.

Never saw it in reruns........it would make a great "rediscovered" show for some channel to pick up!

This was a great show. I remember my mom, brother, sister and I looking forward to watching it. I was a bit young for some of the humor, but liked it anyway. It would make a great follow up to Frasier episodes on Lifetime.

A pre-Boy Meets World Ben Savage played Judd Hirsch's son on this show, which I found interesting. I'd always thought BMW was Ben Savage's first regular role.

So underrated. I remember watching it when I was 3 or 4. Then, after the series finale I haven't seen it on anywhere. It's one of the first TV shows I liked/remember watching.

I wish I could find it on YT.

Also. Jere Burns was just great in it. I loved him as Kirk.

I've always said the same thing.
It was great at 9:30 because of its calm opening and relaxed atmosphere in the show. Judd Hirsch was terrific and the guy who played Kirk was a good foil.
The show never got the accolades it deserved and could have lasted 2 or even 3 more seasons.

I always say that Judd Hirsch should play Madoff in a movie. Never mind the other guys who played him. He's more talented and resembles him the most. Much like the show "Dear John", Hirsch has been one of the most underrated actors in sitcom history.

Along with him, I say Mark Linn-Baker is also in that category..as is Perfect Strangers. Very underrated and yet it is what made the crux of "TGIF".

This is a "cute" show. It's not very "LOL!" at all, but cute.
