In a 1968 episode we have Emmett in a funk over turning 50. So he was born in 1918.
In a 1971 episode (the final episode of the series) we have Emmett trying to cash in on his wind up phono gadget, that he invented and patented in 1932. So Emmett was inventing and patenting at age 14, huh? Pretty young for an inventor! |

And Paul Hartman was born in 1904, which means he was 64 the year that "turning fifty" episode was made. I picture the writers turning in a script that has Emmett turning sixty, and Paul saying, "The viewers will never believe I'm that old!", and the writers saying, "Um... okay."
