Gene Reynolds (created both shows). Actors William Christopher, Robert Hogan, etc. appeared on both show. There was plenty of mention of the bad Nazi enemy (like Goebbels) on HH but no mention of the one-and-only brutal mass-murderer of North Korea (Kim II Sung) on Mash.

PS If Alan Alda had done an ep of HH, what could he have feasibly played?

Gene Reynolds had nothing to do with the creation of Hogan's Heroes. That show was created by Bernard Fein and Albert S. Ruddy. Fein, may have gotten the idea for the series 2 years earlier when he appeared in The Twilight Zone episode "He's Alive" which starred Dennis Hopper as an American Neo-Nazi who was constantly heckled by the character played by Fein.

What in his life caused Alda to actually believe that Kim II Sung was a better human being than President Eisenhower? Sung would kill 700,000 minimum of his own North Koreans (often just for crimes as petty as not keeping their household photo of Sung himself shiny enough!). And then comes Sung's son who kills hundreds of thousand more of his own North Koreans. And did Alda really think Mao (of the People's Republic of China) was greater than Chiang Kaishek when the former leader would kill like 50 million of his own Chinese?

What about dictators who have killed their own people, just for disagreeing with them on Capitalism? You're not gonna express any outrage over that?

The problem is not that Alan Alda has viewpoints. The problem is that people believe him because he's an actor and sounds convincing, even though he has no idea what he is talking about.

Maybe the confusion comes in with the fact that Gene Reynolds directed some episodes of Hogan's Heroes. When you look at some of the earliest episodes of MASH, they do lift some moments from the movie and some eps have the feeling of a Hogan's Heroes episode until they found their own footing.
