why flying

I liked this show it was very charming but the flying part mad no sense to me.I can see if see had an intuition or premonition of something happening but a small gust of wind comes up and shes airborn.plus she never uses this ability in the episodes so why even invent this strange think????

The TV show was based on a novel by Tere Ríos called 'The Fifteenth Pelican'. Sister Bertrille's flying ability was perhaps a more a prominent theme in the book than the TV episodes.

I never read it. Would be interesting to hear from somebody who has.

There may have been a desire on the part of the production company to draw a clear destinction between The Flying Nun and The Singing Nun. Many TV shows in the 1960's were based on films, "The Odd Couple", "Please Don't Eat the Daisies", "Going My Way", "No Time for Sergeants", just to name a few. It may have been easier (and cheaper) to work out right fees. I do agree the flying was unnecessary, it added nothing.

Haven't you ever had a dream that you were flying without an airplane? Just about everyone has at one time or another.

So Gidget had a dream that she was a nun who could fly. In the final episode Gidget was going to wake up and be her old self again (several years older, actually) but the show was cancelled before they could get around to making that episode.

Back then, there were many shows which had some 'gimmick' in their storyline to attract viewers. BEWITCHED, I DREAM OF JEANNIE, MY MOTHER THE CAR, MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, MISTER ED etc. This was one of them.
