With Melissa McCarthy's "Mike & Molly" character now pursuing a career as an author, what better time to introduce a little Misery into her life? The CBS sitcom has booked Kathy Bates to play Molly's new pal, Kay McKinnon, in an upcoming episode.

Bates, who costars with McCarthy in this summer's big-screen comedy Tammy in July, had first been approached to guest star on a November episode of the sitcom as a famous author, but was in New Orleans shooting "American Horror Story: Coven" and was unable to accept.

The role instead went to Susan Sarandon, who also stars with the funny ladies in Tammy.

On the Golden Globes red carpet, "Mike & Molly" executive producer Chuck Lorre told me that Bates' character and Peggy Biggs (Rondi Reed) were best buds back during their high school days.

But when Kay, now a well-traveled world photographer, comes for a visit, she immediately hits it off with Molly, leading Peggy to accuse Molly of stealing her best pal.

Didn't she play a famous author that Molly saw in the grocery store, stalked, then advanced unwelcomingly?

"American Horror Story: Coven's" Kathy Bates is bringing misery to CBS's "Mike & Molly" on the March 17 episode when she guest stars as Kay, an old buddy of Molly's grouchy mother-in-law, Peggy.

Kay has a fun-loving, freewheeling, very un-Peggy-like personality that makes Molly (Melissa McCarthy) her biggest fan. But Peggy quickly grows resentful of Molly and Kay's *nascent friendship.

"Kay's an exciting, well-traveled, well-read adventurer," executive producer Al Higgins says.

"Molly sees her as a kindred spirit who's lived the life she's just begun living since she quit her teaching job. But Peggy is a tad territorial over Kay. She doesn't exactly have many friends, and she thinks Molly is trying to steal one of the few she's got left."

Kathy Bates is heading back to "Mike & Molly". She'll reprise her role in an upcoming episode on the CBS sitcom as Kay McKinnon, a globe-trotting, worldly photographer who also happens to be Peggy Biggs' (Rondi Reed) best friend from high school.

She originally appeared last season, where we saw her hit it off with Molly (Melissa McCarthy).
