The "Veronica Mars" comeback continues. On the heels of the long-gestating movie finally getting made this year through a kickstarter campaign, "Veronica Mars" also is getting a spinoff series, for now online only.

The CW made the announcement at the top of its TCA presentation. No details were given about the series, which will be for the CW’s digital platform CW Seed, but it hails from "Veronica Mars" creator and the movie’s co-writer/director Rob Thomas.

“He is very excited about it,” CW president Mark Pedowitz said, noting that Thomas will focus on the digital series after he completes work on the "Veronica Mars" movie as well as on a hot drama project he has at the CW, "iZombie", which I hear looks very good for a pilot pickup.





Pedowitz said the spinoff originated with the digital division of Warner Bros., the studio behind the original series, which reached out to CW Seed. The deal was sealed with a phone call by Pedowitz to Thomas who committed to the project.

Thomas has concept ideas and plans for “potential people who could be involved” but nothing has been locked in yet, Pedowitz said. The spinoff is expected to feature characters from the original series, with Kristen Bell’s Veronica likely to make occasional appearances.

“I have great faith in Rob,” Pedowitz said. Since CW Seed is designed as an incubator for shows that could transition to TV, it is not inconceivable to see "Veronica Mars" back in primetime.

Well that didn’t remain a secret for long.

Mere hours after CW boss Mark Pedowitz announced (mostly vague) plans for a "Veronica Mars" web-based spin-off series, franchise boss Rob Thomas has revealed which character will headline the digital offshoot.

“It’s a comedy featuring Ryan Hansen attempting to put together a Dick Casablancas spin-off of Veronica Mars,” Thomas shared on Twitter late Wednesday.



The web series, which will stream on The CW’s digital arm CW Seed, will consist of roughly eight 10-minute episodes.

It’s not expected to debut until after the feature film hits theaters on March 14.

And "Veronica Mars" lives on: CW Seed, The CW’s digital-only studio, announced Monday they’re launching a spin-off starring Ryan Hansen called "Play It Again, Dick".

The show will be co-written and produced by "Mars" creator Rob Thomas and will star Hansen as himself as he tries to get the character he played on "Mars", Dick Casablancas, a spin-off of his own.



What this means, Marshmallows? Expect to see multiple guest appearances by "Veronica Mars" alums as Hansen tries to get them in on the faux project.

"Play It Again, Dick" is set to debut on CW Seed later this summer.
