The problem with Sally Field was that nobody took her seriously until after "Norma Rae." Not just "Gidget," not just "The Flying Nun," but also "The Girl With Something Extra"--all those series had her as a lighter-than-air character. Whether she was "toodles-ing" as "Gidget," up in the air as Sister Bertrille as "The Flying Nun," or as one "who suffered from ESP" in "The Girl with Something Extra" -- although having John Davidson as her husband would make almost any woman suffer! -- Sally Field in her sitcom days had nothing truly memorable to offer.
And as for "Gidget" in a second season? I don't think so....sitcom reality in 1966-67 was decidedly unrealistic. We were still living in a world where everybody drove the current model of the auto sponsor's car, had neatly-dressed, neatly-pressed parents and children, and the mother wore pearls while dusting and cleaning. "Gidget" was more a late 1950's show than a mid-'60's show. |
