Season 1 will be re-released on 6/24/14 by MPI.
I may buy this because the sets released by Rhino are horrible quality. http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Favorit...-Edition/19653 Hopefully, a season 2 set will follow shortly and new sets for The Donna Reed Show. |

For me, seasons 1 and 2 DVD of My Favorite Martian from Rhino are fine, they are not perfect but I don't have any major problems with them. Donna Reed is a different matter, seasons 1-3 need to be released again, previous releases of those seasons are terrible in terms of quality.

Own both Aussie versions of 1 & 2 and may double-dipped especially after the horrible treatment of season 2....

My Rhino sets have good, sharp b/w pictures, my main objection to the Rhino sets are the DVDs themselves. 1st they're double sided, making them super sensitive, 2nd the plastic the DVDs are made out of seems rather brittle, either that or the packaging DVD hubs are so stubborn in holding on that you can't get the DVDs out of their holders without cracking the middle of the DVD hub hole. I know that happened with 1 of my Rhino DVDs, they just seem very delicate.

My main reason for wanting to upgrade is the horrible double-sided discs. I HATE double-sided discs!!

It's confirmed June 24 will be the day for the Shout Season 1 release. The extras sound interesting to me too:
•Original Series Pilot •Ray Walston 1964 Promotional Game Show Appearance •Photo Gallery •Vintage Ray Walston Commercial •Lost TV Pilot - The Reluctant Eye •Soundtrack Music Album •Original Sponsor Spots Only 2 of these extras are already available, the original Pilot is on the Season 3 Umbrella Entertainment Aussie set & the soundtrack is already out on a CD by LaLa Land records. Though the La La website has stopped selling it but it's still around on Amazon and probably ebay. But another b/w Season 1 set is not something I really need, though I will buy just because I don't like the double sided Rhino's and one of mine is slightly cracked at the center rim. What I really would love to buy is a colorized set of Seasons 1 & 2. Also to have the syndicated versions of the season 2 episodes on Rhino presented uncut for a change on a future Shout set. A color version of My Favorite Martian is a dream of mine to finally see. Wow. And please you b/w nuts, spare me your b/w is better lecture , you're wastin' your breath.

Appreciate the update! Thank you!
Yes, the unaired pilot and sound track are already available but, considering how difficult it is today to track down footage from promos, commercials and TV interviews from the 60s, this bonus listing is encouraging. I have a wish list of specific talk show and game show appearances by Ray Walston and Bill Bixby during the 60s and 70s, but I doubt any of those shows will be found, much less see the light of day if they are, due to costs and legal hassles But one never knows.... |

I have the Season 3 MPI release on my DVD want list.
I bought both Season 1 and 2 Rhino sets in previous years (hated the double-sided discs, too, which Universal is notorious for) and thought the quality was an improvement over the syndicated reruns. I also got the Season 3 set from Umbrella Entertainment (Australia) which has nice extras like the unaired pilot (1963) but my only negative observation is that the condition of the film prints appear to be from VHS tapes and the color was faded. But they were at best adequate, better than nothing. I really have no complaints about any of them. I've watched them all at least twice now since the initial purchase in between other TV shows and movies in my DVD collection. I also have 10 of the My Favorite Martians early 70's animated series (Filmation) but they are in very poor condition (VHS to DVD transfers). Of course this is like comparing apples to oranges. The cartoon series did not even remotely resemble the classic Ray Walston-Bill Bixby TV series of the 60's. One of these days I'll get the MPI re-releases of MFM. Now if only whoever was behind the original 2011 release of Julie Newmar's short-lived 1964 series My Living Doll (11 episodes) could locate those remaining 15 episodes film prints and put them on DVD for the My Living Doll fans....MPI has no updates on it. |
