Strictly coincidence or MFM homage? "Mad Men"(season 7 episode 3, April 27, 2014) features a clip from My Favorite Martian. Toward the end of the show, Betty is forlornly sitting with her 5 year old son watching TV when her husband comes in to ask what happened on the field trip with her older son. We see and hear their TV which is featuring a scene from MFM's season 1 last episode "Uncle Martin's Wisdom Tooth". Its dialogue can be heard in the background during the Mad Men scene. Martin wants Tim to take him to an oculist.
Although this Mad Men episode is taking place approximately in April of 1969, MFM was being rerun that spring in NYC on channel 5 at 6:30 PM Coincidentally, in an earlier scene in the same episode we see that Megan's LA house has a yellow Wendell Lovett conical freestanding fireplace in the living room, just like the blue one featured in Tim O'Hara's apartment. |

Once again, another My Favorite Martian clip is heard in Mad Men (season 7 episode 7, May 25, 2014). It's around July 17, 1969 as Apollo 11 heads toward the moon. This time, toward the beginning of the show, Peggy's neighbor, a 10 year old boy, puts on the TV in her apt and we hear the dialogue from the opening scene in the MFM "Danger! High Voltage" episode, the show being in reruns in NYC at that time.
Perhaps the selection of "Martian" to be on TV that week in 1969, may have been to contrast the actual moon landing that Sunday, which the Mad Men characters discussed and all watched later in that episode. |
