This was an interesting article. I don't agree with all of it though. I think the show was very appealing, had witty dialogue, whacky and interesting storylines.

I watched the show, remember the article and know exactly what MacKenzie was getting at. In fact, he was much kinder than I would have expected. I think he deliberately drew out a general description of the show before giving any kind of opinion. He didn't typically do that.

The characters never became real. Part of the problem is they seemed to be a bit too exaggerated and stereotypical, but giving all due respect to what would prove in time to be a very talented cast, the direction--as much as the material--was lacking and they never quite rose above that.
