TV Chi McBride Upped To Regular on "Hawaii Five-0"

Chi McBride Scores Role on "Hawaii Five-0" - EXCLUSIVE
by Sandra Gonzalez
Jul 10, 2013

"Hawaii Five-0" historians will appreciate this.

The upcoming fourth season will see the addition of SWAT Captain Lou Grover, a character that first appeared in an episode of the original series. And the cherry on top of the good news? He’ll be played by Chi McBride.

McBride will first appear in the season premiere, which airs Sept. 27 and starts shooting today in Hawaii.

It’s always fun to dig back into Five-0 mythology and resurrect a character — and in this case, Chi McBride plays SWAT Captain Lou Grover,” says executive producer Peter Lenkov.

Recently transferred to Hawaii from Chicago, Grover isn’t easily sold on Five-0′s tactics, referring to the task force as: ‘McGarrett and his merry band of do-whatever-the-hell-they-want.’ What Five-0 does conflicts with Grover’s own style of law enforcement. And that creates good conflict, so prepare for some combustive tension between the two this season.

McBride is currently only scheduled to appear in the first episode of the new season but the possibility for more is likely.

Chi McBride Promoted To Series Regular on "Hawaii Five-0"
Nov 21, 2013
by Liz Raftery

"Hawaii Five-0" fans, get ready to see a lot more of Capt. Lou Grover. Chi McBride has been promoted to a series regular on the CBS series, TVGuide.com has learned.

The "Boston Public" and "Pushing Daisies" alum made his first appearance as Grover (a character who also appeared in the original series) in the Season 4 premiere this fall. Grover recently moved with his family from Chicago to Oahu and now heads the S.W.A.T. unit on the island.

"After his first guest spot, we knew we had something special here with Chi playing Captain Lou Grover," showrunner Peter Lenkov said in a statement.

"He just fit seamlessly into the fabric of Hawaii Five-0 and viewers are enjoying the spirited, if sometimes antagonistic, interaction between him and McGarrett. We are so thrilled to welcome Chi into our Ohana."

Added McBride: "I know this sounds corny but the only thing I ever wanted in my career was to be on CBS, the home of my idol Jackie Gleason. ... CBS graciously invited me to be a member of the cast of Hawaii Five-0 and it's been wonderful. The cast, crew and production have been so welcoming to me, and so my love affair with CBS continues."
