Character actor Garry Walberg, who played the frequently exasperated Lt. Frank Monahan on NBC's "Quincy, M.E.," starring Jack Klugman, died March 27 in Northridge, Calif., of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease and congestive heart failure. He was 90.

Walberg was a series regular during the entire 1976-83 run of the crime drama, in which Monahan was almost always skeptical, at first, of coroner Quincy's contentions regarding a murder.

The character actor had a long career in television that began with an episode of "Mister Peepers" in 1952. He had recurring role on ABC primetime soap "Peyton Place" as Sgt. Edward Goddard and later as one of Oscar's poker buddies on "The Odd Couple." Walberg guested on series including "The Twilight Zone" (he was in the first episode), "The Rifleman," "Rawhide," "Have Gun -- Will Travel," "Dr. Kildare," "Perry Mason," "Star Trek," "The Fugitive," "Lassie," "The Rockford Files" and, later, "Murder, She Wrote."

The actor also appeared occasionally in feature films, beginning with "Gangster Story" in 1959. He played a doctor in "Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here" and the medical examiner in "They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!" He was a general in the 1976 version of "King Kong," the governor in "Two Minute Warning" and a general in 1977's "MacArthur," starring Gregory Peck.

Walberg was born in Buffalo, N.Y.
