I often wondered? In season 1 and season 2 they shot a few scenes outside of Arnold's in the parking lot. I wish they would have done more of this but I guess it comes down to cost and convenience perhaps? In the later seasons they'd just use the same old footage and use a few seconds of it. There's a place by my me (The Chatterbox) that reminds me of Arnold's, same kind of vibe and I Love this place. Burgers, dogs, shakes, 50's music and classic cars. Henry Winkler has been there promoting his Hank Zipzer books a couple years ago. I wish I could have gone. Arnold's looked like a real restaurant but was it? Or was it just a fake Hollywood set to look like a restaurant? The very 1st episode Arnold's was actually called Arthur's. For whatever reason they changed it? |

My guess is the change happened because Happy Days began filming in front of a live audience in season three, which is why they showed a few seconds of stock footage for establishing shots of Arnold's in each episode
Any exterior footage would have to be shot without the audience, so that's probably why they did away with th parking lot scenes. And yes, I find it amusing that in the first episode only, the drive-in is called "Arthur's." Especially when you consider that's Fonzie's real name. |

I thought the name "Arthur's" was funny too after finding out about this Easter Egg.
I figured they would film outside as well because of the live audience. But really looking at this photo, I am trying to figure out the surrounding area. It looks like the Paramount lot? Here's a few more from s2ep24 Happy Days Not with my sister you don't. As the Fonz rolls in I notice some bicycle racks and buildings and homes near by Arnold's. In these behind the scenes photos is some other backdrops which shows other evidence of perhaps the Paramount lot? NOT to promote a shameless plug, but man I just Love the http://chatterboxdrivein.com because it SO reminds me of Arnold's and Happy Days. Everyone should have a place like this near their home. |
