I think what we have here is a spin off hybrid, definitely owning some of the characteristics of a spin off, but also owning characteristics completely contrary to the show of original origin.

It appears two different concepts were merged here, Michael Evans developing a series about a working class poor black family living in a Chicago housing project, while at the same time Lear was developing a spin off vehicle for Esther Rolle's Florida character. Someplace the two ideas became one and Good Times is born.

I guess the Lear folks got the best of both worlds trading on the goodwill and popularity of the Maude Florida, while at the same time presenting a completely different version of that character with a backstory that has virtually nothing in common with Maude's Florida.

Without looking a the rating demos Iwould think over the course of time the two shows had very different audiences so there was little in the way of actual confusion.

And that's the other reason Good Times is not really a spinoff since both shows had two different audiences.. And that was mainly because it was no transition.

Two different audiences? What does that have to do with Florida Evans having her own spin off? Is it or isn't a spin off in YOUR world? LOL Make up your mind.

The fact that both shows had a different audiences confirms that Good Times is not really a spinoff.

I don't think many fans of Maude followed Florida to Good Times mainly because it was no transition

...so by that logic would Happy Days Season 1-3 be a different show than Happy Days Season 8-11 ?!? the majority of fans/audience are very strongly divided between those two eras.

That was just losing viewers not necessarily having two different audiences.

ratings for season 8 and 9 were still higher than the first season and a half, so not really; but my point was that most fans of the show are either big fans of the first few seasons and HATE the later seasons or vice-versa.

i just don't think that WHO tuned in really has anything to do with whether a show would be considered a spin-off or not.

again, i admit that Good Times isn't the perfect example of a spin-off and there are some technicalities, but the central character for the show essentially originated on a different show and for that alone it should be considered a spin-off in the most simple definition.

You have bipolar views. Is it or isn't it? For a good two weeks you were talking about it's a "fractured" spin off, now all of a sudden it's not in your world.

If we both can agree it's a fractured spinoff then the debate is over

Is it a fractured spinoff?

No, because there isn't a such thing as a "fractured spin off." I told you that I'm not going to agree to something that I don't believe. Florida Evans was spun off into her own show, that is a true fact and it ain't gonna change.
