Alfre Woodard has been tapped to play Sam's mom on "Private Practice", Entertainment Weekly reports.

The actress will guest-star in an episode slated to air this November. Maybe Sam (Taye Diggs) will have some happy engagement news to share?

"Private Practice" premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c on ABC.

It's time to meet Sam's mommy on "Private Practice"!

Dee Bennett (Alfre Woodard) will come to town in the Tuesday, Oct. 30 episode (10/9c on ABC), in which she seeks out her son Sam's (Taye Diggs) help after her boss Raymond McCray (Shaft's Richard Roundtree) falls ill.

TVGuide.com has the exclusive first look at the episode, which also features "Lost" alum L. Scott Caldwell as Jillian McCray, Raymond's wife.





The Sam-centric hour will feature the hot doc embarking on a career in reality television, which will shed some light on issues in his colleagues' personal lives.

But based on the tense photo with his mom below, it looks like mother and son have some issues to deal with as well.
