Default Here's my problem with Mike and Molly

I was so excited when MnM premiered. It had the potential to be like no other show: a sitcom about 12 Step recovery. At this point, I think pretty much everybody in America knows somebody who's been to one 12 Step program or another. Too bad the Mike and Molly writers haven't.

MnM it is simply like every other show out there except the stars are obese. It is very funny, really well written, has great supporting cast members, two really fun stars but... they never lose weight, every once in a blue moon they go to an obligatory meeting, the meetings are offensive versions of actual 12 Step meetings and in the beginning Mike and Molly did nothing but have sex. After tonight's awful, lying in a meeting episode, I am done with the show.

If you've ever been to a 12 Step meeting, you know that the quirkiest people and the most normal seeming people come together and laugh their butts off. But they also recover. It's amazing.

I so wanted this show to be the one show about recovery that was genuine but it's not. I am happy the stars are not stick thin but why show two people who meet at a place for addicts to recover only to show the program doesn't work?

Excellent post, the show to me has its funny moments, but it is not a personal favorite. MY question is this though, if you think the show has a funny cast of characters and decent writing, why give up on it just because of the 12 steps? It is still a relatively new show and I am show it'll get better (I hope)

Really good point here. One thing you have to keep in mind though is Mike & Molly is a TV show and a Comedy. This show is meant for its viewers to go on a journey and fall in love with its characters not show you exactly how 12 step programs work. Like I said, it's a comedy. People want to laugh and enjoy watching the show, not be consumed with how much weight the two have been loosing/ gaining. I can appreciate your post, but please remember its just a silly TV show.

I can identify with their struggles to lose weight, and I don't know that it was actually intended to be a show about weight loss, but rather a show about how the obese can find love just like anyone else. I don't even see the "obese-ness" when I watch the show - I see 2 people who are funny and caring...and a person who is high most of the time. LOL

I love the show. I don't think the funniest people on it are Mike & Molly though. I love Mike's mother. She's a hoot. lol

I personally think its suppose to be a show about to overweight people who struggle with their weight. Majority of people who deal with extreme weight issues do so in a yoyo way. This is more realistic than if they stuck with the program and never binged on oreos or had real life get in the way, as people have pointed out in other forums you need to eat so you will always be fighting your addiction.
