Theme Song of My Mother the Car, sung by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who also did "The Doberman Gang," and Hand Me Down that Can of Beans" from "Paint your Wagon," the movie.
Everyone knows, in the second life, we all come back sooner or later, As anything, from a pu--ss-y* cat, to a saw-toothed ally-gator. Well, you all may think my story is more fiction, than it's fact; But believe it or not, my Mother Dear decided she'd come back: As a CAR! She's my very own guiding star! A 1928 Porter! That's My Mother Dear! She helps me through everything I do, and I'm so glad she's here! My Mother the Car! My Mother the Car! [ *silly message board censored that word for "cat." So I used dashes] The show was FUNNY, not at all bad. The critics just didn't like the concept of a man driving around his mother as a car. They got all pissy and Freudean. The car was REALLY a Pierce-Arrow, as you could see by the distinguishing mascot of an arrow on the grillplate. They SHOULD'VE done that line: A '28 Pierce-Arrow! That's My Mother Dear! Same rythm! I taped all of the episodes, when they were rerun on channel 20, in the 1980s--but on Beta, and I've lost them, sorry. It was a GOOD show, very funny, and got a bad rap!

I saw an episode about 5-7 years ago and taped the theme. I thought it was rather catchy. So the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sings the theme. HMM I was surprised when I saw the show for every tv book and critic said it was the worst show EVER .. I have seen far worst. I would like to see a few more episodes. I know its a fluff show but I like fluff shows.

Looks like the NGDB may have changed the lyrics, which originally used the phrase "a man eating ally-gator"... |

Lyric change
Quote:
The series "It's About Time" altered its lyrics, too. The CD version ( on compilations of classic TV themes ) has one version going "It's about strange people in the strangest place" instead of "It's about cave people in the strangest place" because some people or another griped that prehistoric people didn't really live in caves, or maybe the characters in the show lived in huts, I don't recall what the gripe was. Another change was "...past a Roman Warrior" to "...past the Roman Senators" because the visual was of a cartoon character dressed in a toga instead of a warrior's garb. BTW, I got a copy of the lyrics from another site, and would like to post it --I guess on the Miscellaneous thread, if there is one. |

Actually, the theme song for "My Mother The Car", which first aired in 1965, was not sung by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. That group's first appearance was in 1966.
This iconic theme was performed by its composer, Paul Hampton, who sang it under the group name "Albuquerque". More about this can be found in Wikipedia.org - search on "Paul Hampton". |
