TV AOl TV Talks To Eric Balfour about "Haven" Season 2 and Future Projects

"Haven" Hunk Eric Balfour on Season 2: There's Weird Stuff Happening in Maine
by Annette Bourdeau
posted Jul 15th 2011

Just when you thought things couldn't get any stranger in Haven, the police chief crumbles to pieces (quite literally) and a mystery woman shows up claiming to be the 'real' Audrey Parker (Emily Rose).

So, yeah. Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show ended on a rather mysterious note.

Season 2 of "Haven" premieres this week, and the first episode raises more questions than it answers. The 'other' Audrey is still around, Nathan (Lucas Bryant) is grieving for his dead father, and Duke (Eric Balfour) has to deal with a mystery woman from his past who blows into town out of nowhere.

Intrigued? AOL TV caught up with Balfour to get more details about what we can expect from Season 2.

What's in store for Duke in Season 2?

I think the most exciting thing that's happening for Duke this season is the discovery of who he is. It's been pretty exciting because a lot of the things we thought about Duke aren't quite what they seem.

It turns out he has a much bigger role to play in what's going on here in this strange little town of Haven.

What's it been like for you as an actor playing such a complicated guy?

Honestly, the best part of the show is playing Duke, because he is so complicated and diverse and he's not just a hero and not just a villain. Although he may be selfish at times, at his core he has a good nature.

Although he wants to be selfish he's often conflicted by the fact that it's hard for him not to do the right thing.

What about this mystery lady who comes into his life in Season 2?

Yeah, there's this fun character they created to be Duke's shotgun-wedding wife. The idea of this character was this was a girl he met somewhere in the world in some sort of crazy situation.

It was hot 'n heavy and as Duke can be, he was impulsive and let his better judgment get ahead of him. Somewhere along the line he got burned by her pretty good. She shows back up and it's definitely a pretty fun arc throughout the season.

Of all the weird stuff that happened in Haven in Season 1, what was your favorite weird thing?

I think my favorite weird thing was the episode where Duke almost ages to death. That was a really fun storyline. It had a sort of Greek mythology juxtaposition to it, the idea that if you sleep with the wrong woman she can steal your soul.

I've been through that a couple times in my life, and I'm still trying to learn that lesson! [Laughs]

What about Season 2? Can you give any hints about what kind of weird stuff we're going to see?

Oh, man. I really am enjoying this season -- the way that they've created troubles that really play on people's emotions. There's an episode that plays on people's most deep-rooted fears.

That was one of my favorites from this season so far, because it's something that's really innate to all of us. It's like Indiana Jones being dumped in a pit with snakes.

What's up with this "other" Audrey? Are we going to be seeing her throughout the season?

Yeah, we are. She's played by an actress named Kathleen Munroe (Survival of the Dead). She's really great.

It was a tough assignment to be doubling somebody as a character and at the same time bringing something unique to the character. She did a really great job.

I know that a lot of the effects are added in afterwards -- what's it like reacting to things that you can't see at the time?

[Laughs] It's usually pretty goofy-looking on set. It's always very silly when you're reacting to something that's not there.

It's always fun watching the dailies of everyone pretending to react to some monster or curse in front of them. Usually we just make fun of each other.

How do you like shooting in Nova Scotia? What do you in your downtime?

Well, fortunately, this little town that we live in, Chester, has an amazing skate park. So I go skateboarding a lot. There's a little local town tavern called The Fo'c'sle that's supposed to be the oldest tavern in this area, and

I've been throwing some parties there and DJ'ing there on Saturday nights every once in a while. It's been fun.

What kind of stuff do people say to you on the streets? What do you get recognized for the most?

It varies. People always have a great affinity for "Six Feet Under". That really strikes people emotionally.

Recently a lot of cool sci-fi fans who dug Skyline last year. And a lot of Duke fans recently. Girls seem to like Duke. Duke is much cooler than I am in real life.

Everyone seems to be asking a lot about a project I have coming up: I'm directing a film later this year based on a graphic novel by Stephen Lindsay called Jesus Hates Zombies. It's pretty awesome. I'm really excited about it.

What else do you have coming up?

I'm going to direct and star in a pilot that I wrote for Fuse Network. It's a comedy about a band, in the vein of Spinal Tap, and that's coming up in September. A

nd then I'm doing a film Susanna Lo wrote, and is directing based on the Manson Girls. I'm going to play Bobby Beausoleil. It's going to be heavy. It's a really interesting take on the Manson story because it really does focus on the girls of the Manson Family and the dynamics they played.

Lots of cool stuff coming up!

Season 2 of "Haven" premieres in the US at 10pm ET/9pm CT on Friday, July 15 on SyFy, and in Canada at 10 pm ET/PT on Monday, July 18 on Showcase.
