Starting tomorrow on Antenna TV we get to see why THree's A crowd did not have the same success as THree's Company. I think it probably because of the FATHER since he didn't like Jack and so many fans love Jack and probably got tired of looking at him.
But starting tomorrow we all get to analyze what really was the problem. |

I think it helps to compare it to the British series, which was moderately successful, and the American "Three's Company."
In the British series, Vicky was a charming straight woman to the lovable clown, Robin (Jack's counterpart). Robin was every bit as goofy and comical as he was on "Man About the House." Putting him in a new scenario, where he could bounce his humour off of Vicky and her curmudgeonly father actually helped to keep the comedy fresh (for a time). In the American series, he just seemed so toned down, compared to how he was in Three's Company, even in the final season. I don't know if it was a decision on the part of the director, to present a more mellow, mature Jack; or if John Ritter was just tired of playing the clown; or maybe he needed a quirky cast of co-stars like he had on TC in order to keep him energized. At any rate, the Vicky-Jack-Mr.Bradford dynamic didn't work and it wasn't funny. |
