I think that My Favorite Martian was the first sitcom to have profanity. In a second season episode called "We Love You, Miss Pringle", originally aired 3/28/1965, Tim O'Hara was in charge of honoring a crotchety old teacher of his named Miss Pringle, played by the great character actress, Doris Packer. At an emotional point in the show, Tim's old class members present Miss Pringle with a wristwatch. Maybe to cut her emotional feelings at her class' affection, she remarks "The d**n thing probably doesn't even work.". I read about this on a MFM webpage and then saw this episode on TV Land, where the line was left in.

Are you saying that the fourth season episode exchange between Mike and Archie "Watergate / G-D" was in the first pilot from 1968/69? That wouldn't make sense. I had read that the pilot eps for AITF were identical except for the casting of Mike and Gloria and this second pilot was the first ep shown.

But in what sense were those words used? In certain contexts, hell and damn are not expletives.

I just watched the first pilot from 1968 on you tube, and Archie said g** d*** not once, but 3 TIMES!!!
