Gloria is laid-off illegally because she is pregnant and Mike starts threatening violence to get her job back. Meanwhile, an exuberant Archie, on his way to a veterans' convention, provides some humor.

Yep, I remember this episode. It was...OK, but it's yet another example that proves if the entire cast is involved in the plot, it's much, much more interesting. Mike and Gloria were pretty much on their own in this one; imagine if Archie had been more involved in the whole protest thing.

I didn't like an episode that excluded Archie, but this episode proved what a hypocrite Mike really was by threatning violence. Just because it touched him personally he took exception that it was acceptable for him to act the way he did.

Well, "hypocrite" might be one way to characterize Mike. Another, less harsh, might be "naive" which I think really describes Mike on many occasions. It's great to have idealism and yearn for a more perfect world, as long as you acknowledge the reality of that world at the same time. Mike's idealism is NOT a bad thing, but the fact that he'd lived a lot less time than Archie brought with it a certain "greenness" in regard to many of life's harsher aspects.

AITF was not about how right any one character was, or how wrong any other character was. It was about an imperfect family struggling to meet the cultural challenges of the 1970's, and learning about themselves and the world in the process.

Personally it's hard not to love them all, quite a bit.

Mike was a hypocrite at other times too. Once he was chiding Archie for bringing home a drill from work for personal use and when Archie calls him out for scamming the phone company by declining a collect call, Mike says, "I'm a victim too". Archie wasn't a victim, but Mike was.
