Upset because four-month-old Joey hasn't been baptized, Archie runs through a litany of misunderstood Christian doctrines (some of which really are funny), kidnaps Joey, tries to bribe a minister, and finally does it himself.

"I hope this takes, Lord, because when I get home, they're gonna' kill me."

In his defense, what Archie lacks in intelligence, he makes up for in love.

I was surprised at Archie for doing that, I mean baptizing a baby does NOT sound like a protestant thing to do. It sounds more like a Catholic thing.

I remember back when that episode first aired in 1976 or 77; my sister pointed out that the batism wouldn't "take hold" because it wasn't done by a priest.

I'm Catholic and Baptizing is not just a Catholic ritual. This is something that takes place amoung most Christian faiths, I would assume including protestants. In fact, alot of Christians believe that being baptized is part of the salvation process. I'm amoung those believers.

I was raised in the Church of Christ and also went to the Baptist quite a bit and baptizing babies was talked down about in both those churches, b/c they said babies were sinless so there was no need to baptize them.

AND the fact Archie sprnkled Joey! Most protestants do not believein sprinkling at all, even Archie was talked bad about that.

Orthodox Christians also baptize infants, and there are lots who belong to those faiths. And it's by the "dunking" method in a baptismal font...!

It's not just Catholics by any means who practice baptism, and as in my example it's believed in for babies.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but there were no babies baptized in the Bible.

Yeah that's what I was taught in the Church I went, that you only need to be baptized when you reach the age of accountability, which is usually about 12 *since that's the age Christ was when he began his teaching* but that varies from person to person.

When I watched that show I could see why Archie did it. What bothered me was how Mike Atheist stand pretty spoke for his wife, Gloria. I believe Gloria went to church before she met Mike and he turned her into an atheist. My point is that Mike made every attempt to upset when it came to religion -- the constant cheap shots, always denouncing religion. So when it came to the baby Mike did it again. Mike should have known how important it was for Archie to baptize his grandson, especially since Archie provided for Mike all those years. They should have compromised: baptize Joey but when he's old enough he can make the decision to go to church or become an atheist like his dad.
