Watch the Trailer for MTV's American Version of "Skins"

MTV's trailer for the upcoming remake of the gritty U.K. teen drama "Skins" shows footage from the first episode, which follows the plot of the U.K. version nearly exact -- though thankfully they didn't use the same exact script.

(British humor doesn't always translate when delivered in an American accent.)

But will it go the way of "The Office" or of "Coupling"?

MTV's "Skins" Gets a Longer (and Better) Trailer

Prepare to let out a tentative sigh of relief, "Skins" fans, because the latest trailer for MTV's new series makes the show look less like a carbon copy of its (probably) superior British predecessor and more like a series in its own right.

From now on we're basing all our pre-show opinions on the just-released clip, if only because it keeps us from crying ourselves to sleep every night wondering exactly how much MTV's going to screw up our beloved show. In fact, we like where this is heading.

The good: MTV Tony is still that one guy who somehow manages to get his way all the time.

MTV Sid (a.k.a. Stanley) is still a hapless dude living in his friend's shadow (though less nerdy and more scrawny).

MTV Chris is still a party animal with an innocent, sweet streak.

The better: MTV Maxxie is a completely different gender -- Tea, a lesbian -- and seems like she'll be the most complex character of the bunch.

The meh: We're still withholding judgment on MTV Michelle because she didn't get enough meaningful screen time in this promo, along with MTV Cassie (a.k.a. Cadie) because it's just plain unfair since there's really no possible way she can hold a candle to the original.
