TV TVSquad Talks To Britt Robertson about Wrapping Up "Life Unexpected"

"Life Unexpected" Star Britt Robertson on Her Character's Future, the Mood On Set and Wrapping Up the Show
by Jean Bentley
posted Nov 30th 2010

When a network declines to pick up the second half of a television season, it's usually a sign that the show won't return for another year. Most people would probably throw in the towel -- but not the cast and crew of "Life Unexpected".

When star Britt Robertson spoke with TV Squad a couple of weeks ago, she said the bad news only made her work harder.

"It's so easy to be like 'Alright, let's close up the shop,'" she said. "But there are so many people who love the show and are having such a great time on it that it's just made us fight harder to show The CW what they're missing out on."

In the final four episodes of season 2, Robertson's character, Lux, will continue her illicit relationship with her English teacher ("It's so wrong, but so good!" Robertson said, and it will unfold into "some pretty big situations.") and deal with the abusive foster family she lived with during middle school ("There are some pretty big storylines involving that.").

What's coming up next for Lux and Eric?

It unfolds slowly but surely and leads up to some pretty big situations.

Tasha keeps thanklessly supporting Lux -- when is she finally going to get fed up with it all?

It happens pretty soon. They have such a strong bond because of their past and everything they've been through together, so I think she's just sort of along for the ride and not really sure the right decisions in her eyes either.

It's the two of them making mistakes as they go along and just supporting each other and hoping those decisions are correct.

It's interesting that Lux is so worried about not having a family, but her relationship with Tasha is very sisterly.

Totally. I think it's pretty obvious that Lux and Tasha, especially now with Tasha being a more present person in her life, you can see that through their childhood that they have definitely built a bond.

They're each other's family for life, no matter what happens.

What's up with Lux and Cate's relationship?

I think up to this point they've sort of settled into their own and developed a pretty good mom/daughter relationship -- much different from last season. You can see the values that have been growing.

But like a normal teenage rebellious kid, there's qualms and fights and arguments that will be coming into play as Lux goes on her journey of making mistakes. It happens. It's definitely become a more parental relationship as opposed to their sisterly bond that was last year.

What episode are you shooting right now?

We're on our twelfth episode right now.

What's the mood on set now that you know "Life Unexpected" didn't get a back nine order?

Surprisingly, it's really uplifting. I think it's made people want to work even harder, which is interesting because it's so easy to be like "Alright, let's close up the shop."

But there are so many people who love the show and are having such a great time on it that it's just made us fight harder to show The CW what they're missing out on.

Are people hopeful that maybe you'll get good news in May?

It's a possibililty, and we're super hopeful. We feel like if we keep putting out great work, it's all we can do to further that situation.

We're just doing what we can and hoping that the fans will support us and keep pushing.

Do the storylines get wrapped up just in case, or is it just going to be open-ended?

Liz has been pretty open about saying that the 13th episode will finalize the second season the way it should be finalized. There are some storylines that will wrap up, but it's open to further episodes, God willing.

She did do a rewrite according to the news that we did get.

What do you want for Lux's future?

I just was reading the last few scripts -- I just hope that she learns how to settle into her own and be able to feel accepted by society and feel like she's normal, essentially, and feel like she's allowed to have a family that loves her and is allowed to have healthy relationships.

I loved the funny video you guys made to promote the show, are you doing any more?

Oh, our viral video? We're hoping to -- we had so much fun. Austin Basis, who plays Math, has written one that's pretty funny, and we're hoping to film that at some point.

But we're just trying to focus on the episodes right now and just make sure that they're the most important thing right now.
