Was that ever explained? I just watched 2 episodes and she kept calling her "Phyllis" and "Phil." Not mom.

This was explained on MTM, Phyllis told Mary she wanted to be more of a friend to Bess than a mother.

Bess did call Phyllis "Mom" in the first MTM episode. "Aunt Rhoda's really a lot of fun. Mom hates her."

Yup, I think that was about the only time Bess ever did that, though. LOL Every other time I remember her referring to her mother, she always called her Phyllis. I can't imagine what it would be like to have Phyllis for a mother. *Shudders* LOL It's not a very pretty picture.

No, I wouldn't want Phyllis as a mother either. She'd probably make an even scarier mother-in-law.

In the episode "Crazy Mama," Bess says that the idea of Bess calling Phyllis by her first name was Phyllis's idea.

Phyllis definately was a bit whacko,in MTM after getting Mary to tell Bess the fact of life,she then says she'll teach Bess them and "make it sound almost real".
Love it on MTM when Rhoda says to Bess:"Hey kid show some respect call her Aunt Phyllis".
